The Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) is the relevant institution to make an assessment of overseas trained specialists to determine the applicant’s comparability to Australian trained emergency medicine specialists.

The college will assess the candidates holding specialist qualifications and advanced standing UK, Canada and USA (FCEM, FRCPC, ABEM) to determine whether they meet the requirements as substantially comparable specialists.

Where an IMG is not eligible for advanced standing an assessment will be made to determine the eligibility for recognition in Australia and the IMG may be required to undertake 12 months supervised practice, fellowship examinations, and specified research components or the IMG may be found not comparable.

The guidelines are provided in detail on the ACEM website www.acem.org.au
