Royal Australian College of Surgeons

Surgeons in Australia undergo 6 years of post graduate hospital training as a minimum. Royal Australian College of Surgeons is the professional body representing Surgeons in Australia. The assessment process undertaken by the RACS will determine on an individual basis as to the comparability of the IMG to an Australian or New Zealand trained surgeon. Should the IMG be deemed partially or substantially comparable the recommendation will require the IMG to satisfactorily complete a designated period of assessment of clinical practice under oversight or supervision. Surgeons with training and at least 5 years experience in NZ, UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Canada, USA, and South Africa may be assessed as substantially comparable. The college recommendation will detail the requirements to be undertaken and surgeons may require 12 month of oversight and review. Overseas trained specialists who are assessed with less than 6 years of training and less than 5 years of experience may be found partially comparable or not comparable. IMG’s assessed as partially comparable may require 12-24 months of oversight, clinical practice reports and qualifying exams. Each case is different, and there are a number of pathways to registration in Australia, so please register with us to have an in depth assessment of your eligibility and registration options with one of our Consultants.
