New Zealand General Practitioner Jobs

There are a wide variety of jobs available for United Kingdom (UK) General Practitioners across the South and North Islands of New Zealand. Enjoy the hospitality, become a part of the local community and indulge in the luxuries of New Zealand’s larger cities whilst working in rural clinics.

Working in a rural environment presents not only a great opportunity for families with young children but allows doctors to refine their procedural skills. While not essential, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics, Anaesthesia and minor surgery skills are valuable for doctors interested in working in General Practitioner jobs in rural settings, with many smaller rural hospitals staffed by General Practitioners with these skills.

While the majority of clients have a preference for a long term or permanent commitment, some practices may consider doctors from the UK looking for locum opportunities. Most clients will generally require a three month commitment, offering you great opportunities to test your skill set, grow your career and get to know Kiwi society in a rewarding and respected role as a General Practitioner.

Doctors working in General Practitioner locum jobs provide crucial cover to urban and rural clinics to ensure primary health services are maintained throughout New Zealand.

New Zealand General Practitioner jobs also allow doctors to work as Urgent Care physicians in either dedicated walk-in clinics, or sometimes may be required to mix General Practitioner and Urgent Care sessions with the one client.

Hospital and Specialist Jobs

When thinking about work in New Zealand keep in mind that it is a 3 step process. The first step is to find the perfect job, second step, gain registration through the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) and lastly organise visas via Immigration New Zealand. We assist you through every step to ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible.

If you hold a primary degree from the UK the process to acquire medical registration with the MCNZ is straightforward.

If you are an International Medical Graduate from outside the UK, but have worked for a minimum of 30 hours per week for at least 33 out of the last 48 months in the UK and currently hold full registration, you may be eligible to work in New Zealand under the ‘Comparable Health System’ pathway.

There may be other methods in acquiring registration with the MCNZ particularly down the vocational assessment pathway. This is on a case by case basis and will be discussed in further detail between the Doctor and OR consultant.
