The Position:

This health service stands as a beacon of excellence in Indigenous healthcare, having earned multiple accolades for its outstanding contributions. Deeply committed to delivering high-quality, culturally sensitive care, the organisation ensures that Indigenous voices are central in shaping health policies and programs. Operating across 11 communities in Cape York, the clinic utilises Best Practice software and functions with a solo GP, supported by nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers. Consultations are a minimum of 20 minutes, with operating hours from Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. There are no emergency department duties, on-call shifts, or weekend work required. Locums have the option to spend weekends in Cairns, with a minimum commitment of three weeks.

Kowanyama is a remote Aboriginal community located in the far north of Queensland, nestled between the Gilbert and Nicholson Rivers. Surrounded by expansive wetlands and savannah, the area is rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage. Essential criteria:

  • Holds specialist General Practitioner registration with AHPRA
  • Fellowship with RACGP or ACRRM
  • Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Strong primary care experience in rural or remote settings, ideally in Indigenous health
  • Cultural awareness and understanding of the unique challenges facing remote Indigenous communities
