Touring Australian Vineyards: Part 2

By , Melinda McCarthy published on 28/04/2021

It’s no surprise that Tasmania’s cool climate, mild summers, and long autumn days are perfect for cool-climate wine growing. With an impressive range of chardonnay, riesling, sauvignon blanc, and pinot gris to satisfy all palettes, the Tassie wine trail is a must for any wine connoisseur.

Hobart and the Coal River Valley Region

The Coal River Valley boasts the best wineries around Hobart.

If you have the opportunity to visit Pooley Wines, you’ll feel like you’re in an episode of Downton Abbey. The Sandstone Estate is overflowing with history and splendor and their Pinot Noir is to die for. For something a little less refined, a little more homely, Puddleduck Vineyard is the place to be. They have a reverse BYO policy meaning you bring the food and they will supply the wine. Let's face it, food can be expensive at wineries. Puddleduck offers the freedom to spend up on their delicious wines while enjoying your home packed picnic lunch.

We have a variety of locum roles in and around Hobart and the Coal River Valley Region to get you started on your working holiday. Lets take a look at a few:

A well-established private billing group practice in Sandy Bay are looking GP Locum coverage whilst one of the doctors is on maternity leave. Starting ASAP and earning $140 per hour, you’ll work Monday to Friday 8.30am – 5pm with no on-call.

Join this friendly multi-disciplinary team in the heart of Hobart. Start ASAP for a minimum of 3 weeks where all your flights, travel and accommodation are provided. You must have FACRRM /FRACGP or VR qualification.

Tasmania’s Huon Valley

South West of Hobart is the scenic Huon Valley. The Huon is only a 30-minute drive from Hobart, making it an ideal day trip or weekend destination. It is home to a booming cider industry, boutique wineries, and cute country cafes specialising in local produce. Vineyard locations are chosen to give maximum exposure to the sun and protection from cold southerly winds. They are situated around rivers and bays, taking advantage of the tempering effects of large bodies of water.

Be sure to check out the Kate Hill Winery in Huonville, Elsewhere Vineyards at Glazier Bay, and Two Bud Spur Vineyard at Gardners Bay when you visit the Huon.

General Practitioners who enjoy working in a community-minded practice will find our current ongoing locum vacancy in the Huon appealing. Not only are you surrounded by the splendor of the Huon, the mixed billing practice is also offering $1,200 per day or 70% of billings, whichever is greater. Part-time arrangements working 2-4 days per week or full-time rosters are available. Whether you’re a local wanting to pick up some extra work or you are from the mainland and wanting to book in a working holiday (now that the borders are well and truly open), you are in luck.

East Coast Wine Trail

Once you have finished with the south, change direction and head north via the east coast via the Great Eastern Wine Drive. Meet growers and winemakers and experience some of the most amazing coastal scenery. Sample fine wines, Tasmanian cheeses, and fresh seafood.

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to locum roles along the east coast. We have opportunities at the Ochre Medical Centre in St Helens, Bicheno General Practice & East Coast Health Triabunna. Venture a tad North and you’ll find flexible locums at both Ochre Medical Centres at Scottsdale and Bridport.

Live the laid-back atmosphere whilst working in St Helens. Work Monday – Friday at the Ochre clinic with shared on-call at the Hospital Emergency Department. Start mid-May and earn $1800 per day. There is an abundance of wineries, eateries, and shops to visit and plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy on your weekends off.
