Are you a Rural Generalist GP/VMO looking for a role where your skills truly matter? Walgett, in north-western NSW, offers a unique chance to combine rewarding medicine with a welcoming community and a vibrant rural lifestyle. With strong support from Ochre Health, you’ll be part of a dedicated team improving healthcare in this region.

The Opportunity

At Ochre Medical Centre Walgett, you’ll step into a busy, varied, and fulfilling role. As the only medical centre in town, the practice provides vital GP services to the community while also supporting Walgett Multipurpose Service Hospital, which is right next door. Doctors can easily walk between the clinic and the hospital to see patients, creating seamless continuity of care.

You’ll enjoy the professional variety of general practice and emergency medicine, supported by an excellent practice management team, experienced nurses, and strong collaboration with the hospital staff. The practice also benefits from visiting specialists in mental health, drug and alcohol services, women’s health, and skin checks — broadening the range of services available to patients and making your work even more impactful.

What’s Included for You

• Full Time total package valued up to $650,000 per annum

• General Practice Billings: Average around $2,000 per day

• On-Call Payments: $2,000 per day, with 161 days rostered annually = $322,000 per year

• Moratorium Reduction: MM6 location with RA4 scaling benefit, reducing the moratorium period to six years

• Relocation and Living Support: Includes a car and house valued at approximately $30,000, conveniently located so you can walk to the hospital when on call

Flexible Roster Options: Permanent role with structured roster choices — either 2 weeks on/2 weeks off or 3 weeks on/1 week off — designed to support a balanced lifestyle while maintaining continuity of care.

• A role that combines high earning potential with excellent professional support, making it both financially and clinically rewarding

About the Practice and Hospital

The centre provides GP services for the community and ensures doctor coverage for the hospital’s emergency department and inpatient care. Conveniently located right next to Walgett Multipurpose Service Hospital, the two facilities work closely together to deliver coordinated patient care.

The hospital itself has 24 beds in total, including 16 acute beds and 8 residential aged care beds. Services include 24-hour emergency care, general medicine, rehabilitation, respite, palliative care, renal dialysis, and a variety of community health programs. With visiting allied health services and specialist support, you’ll be part of a comprehensive and collaborative rural healthcare system.

Life in Walgett

Walgett, meaning “meeting place of two rivers,” sits at the junction of the Namoi and Barwon Rivers in north-western NSW. With a population of around 6,100, it’s a welcoming agricultural town with a strong Aboriginal presence and rich Gamilaraay, Yuwaalaraay, and Ngayimbaa heritage.

Historically a hub for wool, wheat, and cotton, Walgett remains a thriving farming region producing beef, lamb, cotton, and grains, and serves as the gateway to the famous Lightning Ridge opal fields.

The town offers a relaxed country lifestyle with plenty to enjoy — riverside fishing, camping, and water sports, as well as community sports including rugby, cricket, tennis, netball, an 18-hole golf course, squash, and a modern PCYC gym. With supermarkets, cafés, restaurants, shops, and essential services all on hand, Walgett combines convenience, community spirit, and natural beauty, making it a great place to live and work.
