The opportunity

This is a rewarding locum opportunity in Coen, a remote Aboriginal community in central Cape York. You’ll provide primary healthcare as part of a supportive team including nurses and Aboriginal Health Practitioners, delivering culturally appropriate care to a small but close-knit community.

The clinic uses Best Practice software with a minimum of 20 minutes per consultation. Hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30am–5:00pm, with no weekend, on-call or after-hours work required. Minimum commitment is three weeks.

About the location

Coen is a small township of around 350 people, located on the Peninsula Development Road in the heart of Cape York. It is surrounded by rivers, waterfalls, and rich cultural heritage, offering a unique chance to live and work in one of Queensland’s most remote regions.

The community is welcoming, with deep cultural traditions, and the surrounding wilderness provides endless opportunities for camping, fishing, hiking, and exploring untouched landscapes.

How to get there

Fly into Cairns, then connect via regional flight to Coen Airport or travel by 4WD along the Peninsula Development Road (approx. 10 hours’ drive). Ochre Recruitment arranges all flights, transfers, and accommodation.

Essential criteria

  • Fellowship with RACGP and/or ACRRM
  • Current AHPRA Specialist GP Registration
  • Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Experience in rural or remote healthcare, ideally Indigenous health
  • Cultural awareness and respect for Aboriginal communities
  • Current ALS2 certificate required
