The opportunity

This is a rewarding locum opportunity in Doomadgee, a remote Aboriginal community in Far North Queensland. You’ll join a multi-disciplinary team providing essential primary healthcare, working alongside other GPs, nurses, Aboriginal Health Practitioners, and visiting allied health specialists.

The Aboriginal Medical Service is co-located within the hospital, creating a comprehensive healthcare environment. The clinic uses Communicare software and operates Monday to Friday, 8:30am–5:00pm, with no on-call, Emergency Department or weekend work required. Minimum commitment is three weeks.

Doomadgee is located in the Gulf of Carpentaria and is home to the Gangalidda and Waanyi peoples. It serves as a vital hub for surrounding Indigenous communities and has a strong sense of cultural identity and connection to country.

Surrounded by wetlands, rivers, and forested landscapes, Doomadgee offers opportunities for fishing, birdwatching, and exploring the remote beauty of outback Queensland. It is a tight-knit community where your contribution as a GP is deeply valued.

How to get there

Fly into Cairns, Townsville or Mount Isa, with connecting regional flights available to Doomadgee Airport. Ochre Recruitment arranges all flights, transfers and accommodation.

Essential criteria

  • Fellowship with RACGP and/or ACRRM
  • Current AHPRA Specialist GP Registration
  • Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Experience in rural or remote healthcare, ideally Indigenous health
  • Cultural awareness and respect for Aboriginal communities
  • Familiarity with Communicare software desirable
