The opportunity

Step into a rewarding locum role on Elcho Island, providing primary healthcare to one of the largest and most vibrant communities in Arnhem Land. You’ll be supported by experienced nurses and Aboriginal Health Practitioners, managing a mix of chronic disease care, preventative health, and acute presentations.

The clinic operates Monday to Friday, 8:00am–4:00pm, with 20-minute consultations allowing for meaningful patient care. There are no emergency department duties, weekend shifts, or on-call requirements.

About the location

Galiwin’ku is the main community on Elcho Island, located off the coast of north-east Arnhem Land. Home to around 2,000 residents, the community is predominantly Yolŋu and is renowned for its strong cultural heritage, thriving arts scene, and stunning beaches.

Working here offers the unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Yolŋu culture while making a tangible difference to community health and wellbeing.

How to get there

Fly into Darwin and connect with a regional flight direct to Elcho Island Airport (Galiwin’ku), a short trip from the community. Ochre Recruitment will arrange all travel and transfers to ensure your placement runs smoothly.

Essential criteria

  • Specialist GP registration with AHPRA
  • Fellowship with RACGP and/or ACRRM
  • Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Experience in rural/remote healthcare, ideally Indigenous health
  • Cultural awareness and commitment to respectful practice within Aboriginal communities
