The opportunity

Take on a rewarding locum placement in Kowanyama, a remote Aboriginal community on the western side of Cape York Peninsula. You’ll provide primary healthcare services as part of a supportive team of nurses and Aboriginal Health Practitioners, delivering culturally safe and meaningful care to the community.

The clinic operates Monday to Friday, 8:30am–5:00pm, using Best Practice software with a minimum of 20 minutes per consultation. There are no weekend, after-hours or on-call requirements.

Kowanyama, meaning “Place of Many Waters,” is home to around 1,200 residents and is known for its strong cultural identity and community spirit. Located on the banks of Magnificent Creek, near the Gulf of Carpentaria, the region is rich in cultural traditions and natural beauty.

Essential criteria

  • Fellowship with RACGP and/or ACRRM
  • Current AHPRA Specialist GP Registration
  • Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Experience in rural or remote healthcare, ideally Indigenous health
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity in Aboriginal health contexts
