The Placement

Queenstown sits on Tasmania’s dramatic West Coast — a working town with real character, surrounded by World Heritage wilderness. It’s remote, it’s genuine, and it’s not for everyone. For the right VMO, that’s exactly the appeal.

Ochre Medical Centre Queenstown is the only private medical centre on the West Coast — a fully accredited practice co-located with Lyell House aged care facility inside the West Coast District Hospital. Three consult rooms, on-site pathology, x-ray available twice a week, and a broad scope of general practice including chronic disease management, antenatal care, children’s health, ATSI health, dive medicals, and visiting allied health services across audiology, cardiology, obstetrics and gynaecology, physiotherapy, podiatry, psychology and social work. A practice that serves the full breadth of a rural community.

Why Ochre

  • Rates from $2,000/day — real negotiation, not a fixed number. Call Francine.
  • Choose how you’re paid — PAYG or Contractor, paid fortnightly
  • Credential once with Ochre and you’re done. No more forms every time you take a new locum. One process — covering every Ochre-managed site across Tasmania.
  • Register with Ochre now and go to the top of the list — credentialed doctors get first access to every shift we open.
  • Your roster locked in before you arrive — no surprises on day one
  • Vacancies available now through to 2027 — and if your dates aren’t on the roster yet, we can lock them in. We own and run the schedule.
  • Ochre owns and operates the GP clinic. We hold the exclusive Tasmania Health contract to provide locum doctors to the hospital. You just practise medicine.
  • Flights, accommodation and car hire all provided — plus a dedicated recruiter and administration team to handle travel, expenses, pay queries and everything in between
  • ShiftMatch launching October 2026 — no more agency calls checking your availability. Log in on desktop or app, pick up shifts, cancel, swap, check your roster in real time. Only see shifts at locations you’ve chosen. No inbox noise. No chasing. Just medicine on your terms.

Across the corridor, the West Coast District Hospital provides accident and emergency care, acute inpatient services, and residential aged care — recently upgraded with improved ED and aged care facilities. As the GPVMO, you’ll cover ED shifts here while also supporting the aged care residents in Lyell House. The closest referral hospital is Burnie, approximately two hours away.

The Essentials

  • Fellowship with RACGP and/or ACRRM
  • Current AHPRA Specialist GP Registration
  • Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Current ALS2 (or equivalent)
  • Recent emergency experience within the last 18 months
