A Locum Doctors Travel & Work Guide to the Magnificent NSW Mid North Coast

Uncover the NSW Mid-North Coast on your next locum: A destination offering beautiful beaches, tranquil rivers, rainforests and mountains.

Regional Emergency Departments along the Mid-North Coast are seeking Emergency Medicine Doctors for short-term and ongoing locum work. You’ll have the opportunity to progress your career, expand your clinical skills, enjoy supporting dynamic and supportive Emergency Medicine teams, gain invaluable experience and increase your professional networks.

The Mid North Coast lies between the Great Divide and the east coast of NSW, halfway between Sydney and Brisbane. The landscape is typified by meandering rivers that feed lush hinterland and over two hundred kilometres of devastatingly pristine beaches. In fact, the region is considered by many to have the most ideal climate in Australia.

Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie are the region's largest towns, both with airports and are less than an hour’s flight to either Sydney or Brisbane. From Port Stephens in the south to Woolgoolga in the north, the subtropical Mid North Coast is dotted with over 150 towns, villages and localities and is home to the Gathang-speaking Aboriginal people, the Biripi and Worimi.

Best things to do during your time off whilst locuming on the NSW Mid North Coast

1.       Wine Tasting: From Rose to Ginger Wine; Chardonnay to Muscat; the regions award winning wines have got your taste buds covered. Perch yourself alongside the Bellinger River, sipping on a Villard Blanc and nibbling a platter of chees at Raleigh Winery or you may prefer the rolling green hills and hinterland as a backdrop while tasting a Blush, Chambourcin or Chardonnay at Two Tails Winery in Nana Glen. Cassegrain Wines is a must for a comprehensive wine tasting experience and if you have kids to entertain, The Bago Maze and Winery is a must.

2.       Visit a lookout: Popular headland and lookout spots include Boambee Headland, Dorrigo Skywalk, Look At Me Know Headland, Emerald Beach, Korora Lookout and Forest Sky Pier, Woolgoolga Headland, Muttonbird Island Lookout and Harry’s Lookout Port Macquarie.

3.       Meander a Market: When you are not working, weekends are made for sleep-ins, morning coffee and exploring new places – and what better way to spend your Saturday and Sunday than perusing local markets. From fresh produce to artisanal foods and handmade crafts, you’ll find a treasure trove of unique finds from Yamba to Tuncurry.

4.       Enjoy a Bush or Coastal Walk: With more than 80 National Parks and reserves in the region, you really are spoilt for choice when it comes to coastal walks and rainforests showcasing a stunning diversity of plants, animals and threatened species. Some popular walks include The Syndicate Ride, Wonga Walk & Rosewood Creek Track in Dorrigo; The Coachwood Walk, Nymboi-Binderary National Park; Sherwood Nature Reserve, Woolgoolga and the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk.

5.       Go Swimming: With kilometres of golden sandy beaches, rivers, creeks, estuaries and waterfalls, there is always a swimming spot to enjoy. Some of our favourites include Lighthouse Beach Port Macquarie, Seal Rocks, Fingal Bay, Crowdy Head, Pebbly Beach Forster, Black Head Beach, One Mile Beach and if you are a surfer, Park Beach at Coffs or Flynns Beach Port Macquarie.

We currently have 3 month-long locum opportunities for Emergency Medicine RMOs at Coffs Harbour Health Campus. The hospital is a level-five teaching hospital for medicine, nursing, and allied health and also acts as a hub for health research in the region. The Campus treats nearly 45,000 emergency presentations each year, including patients with a range of serious and life-threatening conditions such as burns and serious trauma.

You’ll earn $120 per hour + super and enjoy a variety of mixed shifts. Travel and accommodation is all provided for you.

“Coffs Harbour Hospital is in such a fantastic location, great team, very well supported. As a training hospital, it’s the perfect location for Junior Doctors to practice medicine. My locum agent Joe also knows I play Golf and managed to score all Doctors a discount at the Coffs Harbour Golf Club. I’m very happy with this location and getting to play a round of Golf on my days off, winning!" Elliot, Ochre RMO.
